My single favorite scene in the history of film, from the Stanley Kubrick masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey
My name is Scott Anderson, and I am truly passionate about film.
I'm not a know it all. I don't believe my opinion is right, it is an opinion and I respect each and every one I come across. Often times I love a movie and someone else downright loathes it. That's okay. The next day I may watch something that I can barely sit through and find out another person treasures it, and that's okay too. Art is subjective, and I am not offended by what people connect to as long as they connect to anything at all. So go ahead and tell me my favorite movies suck. Hell, tell me my review sucks, I don't mind, I can take it. As long as you are reading my words in the first place, it means the world to me.
I am 34 years old and I live in the suburbs of Chicago with my amazing wife and daughter. I work a regular desk job during the day, at which I daydream about going home and being able to spend time with my family, and then I cherish the opportunity to turn the lights out late at night and watch a movie. Watching as well as writing about film is what I love to do, and I hope you enjoy reading some of my thoughts even half as much as I enjoy writing them.
I don't believe in the idea of bad genres. Romantic comedy? Bring it on, there have been plenty of wonderful films that fit this description. Gore porn horror? Not usually my cup of tea, but I will give it a shot and hope to be surprised. A film is either good or bad, no matter who the intended target audience is, and I am willing to watch absolutely anything and keep an open mind.
I, too, am a film buff but I don't get to see many new releases. I look forward to reading about them in your blog.

DeleteScott, I'm into your approach to enjoying films. I myself have been going through my old VHS tapes (pre History Of Violence, if you get my gist) and reliving the classics. But I'm also always locking into anything I haven't seen, new and old and taking every opportunity to check out more.

I just looked at your top favorite films. Tree of Life??? It had big names in it, but it was largely unfathomable. When I left the theater, I had to read the promo poster to figure out what I'd just seen. The Worst.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny Kim, the first time I saw it I had the exact same experience. It was actually at home and I turned it off before it was over.
DeleteI was encouraged to go back and try it again and open my mind up, knowing what to expect this time around and I saw it on a deep, profound level. I saw that Malick was showing the world both through the microcosm of a single American family and then also taking his time to zoom out and show the miracle of existence through a portrayal of the creation of world and everything that has happened to lead to us being able to live here. Also, the absurd fragility of life, that we go through the miraculous way our world become livable and we go through the amazing process of giving birth and raising a child and then something like the violence of a war can take it all away in an instant.
I went from turning it off the first time to being overwhelmed emotionally the second and third and on and on times. It honestly makes me appreciate being alive more than I ever have before and to cherish each day.
